Vanier Park - Kitslilano - Yaletown

Here we are again!

Con il 2° giorno libero della settimana, 2° update! :-D

Mattina dedicata a rifornire il frigorifero, perennemente vuoto, con visita al mio caro discount di fiducia! Il NO FRILLS! Con l’aiuto di Google Maps son riuscito a trovare un modo più veloce per arrivarci senza fare chilometri camminando con 4\5 borse! Finalmente mi son comprato un po’ di roba, così non sarò più costretto a farmi spennare dal supermercato qui di fronte, dove tutto costa il doppio! Ho notato una cosa comune qui cmq: il formaggio e i salumi costano tantissimo credo il doppio che in Italia (dovrò fare una visitina a qualche negozio italiano in Commercial Drive prima o poi) e non c’è il cioccolato!! O meglio, in Italia ci sono 200 marche diverse, qui si trovano solo Lindt e Toblerone. Nient’ altro!! Nel pomeriggio sono invece andato dalle parti di Kitsilano Beach ma non esattamente in spiaggia ma a Vanier Park che sarebbe il più grande dei 15 parchi presenti nel distretto di Kitsilano. Vi si trovano il Vancouver Maritime Museum, l’H.R. MacMillan Space Center e qualche altra cosa culturale! Ho visto tutto da fuori, come a Las Palmas mi dedicherò ai musei e cose simili quando dovrò andarmene! Sulla via del ritorno, mi son fatto un giretto in spiaggia e sulla Seawalk in Yaletown. Si vede che è arrivata l’estate (22° C, nulla a che vedere con Milano, dove mi viene detto che si muore a circa 35° C... io già a 22, soffro il caldo!!)! Confronto a due settimane fa, è strapieno di gente!! Sembrava di vedere la spiaggia di Los Angeles in Baywatch!! A conti fatti, la mia esplorazione di Vancouver procede. Devo ancora vedere la zona dell'università e North Vancouver ma devo dire che sono abbastanza soddisfatto. Sto cercando di fare il più possibile quando non lavoro.

Proprio ieri Graham m’ha fatto sapere che ritornerà qui a Vancouver domani! Incredibile, è gia passato un mese da quando era partito per gli States! In coincidenza con il suo ritorno ho iniziato a provare a vedere cosa fare quando finirò di lavorare… è ancora una cosa lontanissima, perché si parla dei primi di ottobre però non è mai troppo presto per informarsi.. Voglio vedermi una bella parte degli States visto che ormai sono già qui e voglio farlo in treno o in autobus. I prezzi dei treni sono ridicoli. Prenotando con 2\3 mesi di anticipo puoi andare da Los Angeles a New York con 180 US $! Quando l’ho visto non ci credevo! Ok, sono 4\5 giorni di viaggio, ma ti attraversi veramente tutta l’America. In alternativa ho provato a vedere qualche tour organizzato, di lunghezza minimo 3 settimane e con 2000 $ cioè quanto si spende per farsi una settimana sdraiati in un villaggio turistico, ti vedi dalla California al Grand Canyon, da New Orleans a Washington. Vedremo, per ora si tratta solo di idee! Potrei addirittura andarmene alla Hawaii visto che sono a 4 ore d’aereo da qui.. chi lo sa!

Cmq oggi é esattamente 1 mese che lavoro ed 1 mese che mi sono trasferito qui in Homer Street a vivere. Manca pochissimo e saranno già due mesi che sono qui. Rispetto a quando sono in Italia, dove non succede praticamente mai nulla.. qui come a LP il tempo vola!

Here we are again!

With the second day off for this week, second update!

Morning dedicated to fill up my refrigerator that is always empty with a visit to my beloved hard discount!nNO FRILLS! With Google Maps I managed to find a faster way to arrive there avoiding a long walk with 4\5 shopping bags! Finally I bought quite a lot of stuff so I’ll not be ripped off again by the supermarket here across the street, where everything costs really twice! I noticed a thing here, by the way: cheese and salami cost so much, probably twice or three times more than Italy (I guess I have to pay a visit to some Italian shop in Commercial Drive soon or later) and there is no chocolate! Or better, back home there is something like 200 different brands, instead here just Lindt and Toblerone, nothing else!! In the afternoon I went around Kitsilano Beach but not exactly on the beach rather in Vanier Park that is the biggest park in Kitsilano district. Here there are the Vancouver Maritime Museum, the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre and some other cultural thing! I saw everything just from outside, like in Las Palmas I’ll visit all the museum only when it’ll be time to go away from here! On the way back, I took a walk on the beach and on the Seawalk here in Yaletown. You can really see that summer has come (anyway 22° C, nothing like Milan where I was told is 35° C and is almost impossible breathe.. my God, for me 22° C is already hot!)! Compared to two weeks ago , it’s so crowdy everywhere! It really looked like Baywatch beach in Los Angeles! In the end I can tell that my Vancouver exploration is going on pretty well. Yea, I've not seen yet the UBC district and North Vancouver but I'm pretty proud for what I am doing in my free days. I try to do my best by myself!

Just yesterday Graham let me know that he’s comin’ back here tomorrow! Amazing, already one month passed since he left to the States! And with his return, I began to look something about what I’ll do when my work time will be over.. it’s still a very far subject since is something that will happen in October but it’s never too early to get some information.. I decided that I wanna see a good part of the States since I’m already here and I’ve a lot of time and I wanna do that by train or by bus. Train prices are ridiculous! If you book 2\3 months in advance, you can go from L.A. to New York for 180 $ US! When I saw these prices I couldn’t believe it! Ok, are 4\5 days in a train but u cross really all America! Otherwise I took a look to some adventurous organized tour and for 2000 US $, the same price that a lot of people spend for 1 week in a resort to get tanned, you go From California to the Grand Canyon, from New Orleans to Washigton D.C. I’ll see.. I could even go to Hawaii since are just 4 hours flying from here .. who knows!

By the way, today is exactly one month that I started to work and one month that I moved here in Homer Street. In a while it'll be two months that I arrived here! Contrary to when I'm in Italy, where always nothing happens, here like back in LP time flies.... Anyway, I still haven't tried the hot tub, the sauna and the steam room, down at the 2nd floor.. If some girl that read these pages, here in Vancouver, wanna try them can let me know ... ahahahah :-D

Laziness won today! :-(

Breve aggiornamento… oggi non c’è l’ho fatta… sono stato sconfitto dalla mia cara laziness!! Dopo 5 giorni lavorativi, il mio giorno off non ha visto particolari avvenimenti! Solo, dormire, tormentato da un maledetto suonatore di sax, che dopo essere scomparso per un po’ è risaltato fuori… le ho viste tutte, pazzi, cantanti, urlatori e ora suonatori di sax.. maledetti!!!! :-D Nel pomeriggio ho cercato di fare qualcosa ma non sono andato al di là di un giretto per vedere la Plaza of Nations, anche questa utilizzata come location in Stargate SG1!! Di questo passo mi girerò tutte le location di Vancouver! Ho scoperto che nella zona dove lavoro, cioè Gastown, hanno girato “I,Robot”! Domani si ritorna al lavoro fino a giovedì! Venerdì sarà off e spero finalmente di farmi la serata fuori!

Short update.. today I lost.. I’ve been defeated by my dear laziness! After 5 days at work, my days off has been relatively quiet! Only, sleep, tormented by a damn sax player that was disappeared for a while but now is back.. I’ve seen everything down my window, crazies, singers, screamers and now sax players.. bastards!!! In the afternoon I tried to do smth but nothin’ more than a short ride to see Plaza of Nations, another location used in Stargate SG1!! I think I’ll see all Vancouver location soon or later! I’ve even found out that where I work, in Gastown, they shot “I,Robot”! Tomorrow back to work, until Thursday! Friday other day off and I really hope to see the Vancouver nightlife!

Shopping..beach and Angels & Demons :-)

Secondo day off e ultimo update per qualche tempo visto che lavorerò fino a sabato sicuramente.
Visita al Metropolis at Metrotown stamattina. 2° shopping centre di tutto il Canada dopo quello di Edmonton.. per me abituato al FoxTown di Mendrisio (Svizzera) è stato un po’ uno shock! Perché?
Perché è enorme!! Se non hai una mappa ti perdi! Ero partito con l’idea di vedere qualche negozio e ho finito col spendere 200 $ di vestiti!! (prezzi irrisori comunque da Aeropostale e American Eagle Outfitters.. ho comprato non ricordo quante t-shirts :-).
Pomeriggio dedicato nuovamente a Kitsilano Beach. Stavolta a farsi quattro tiri a basket! Il mio tiro libero è un po arrugginito!!
Stasera son andato a vedermi “Angels & Demons”… non male..direi che valeva i 12.50 $ del biglietto… era un po’ ridicolo ascoltare i dialoghi degli attori, ovviamente americani che tentavano di parlare italiano.. AHAHAH! Mi piegavano! Spettacolo poi che l’anno scorso sono stato in tutti i posti dove l’hanno girato con il mio amico Sfigghy! Incredibile cmq come sono riusciti a ricostruire l’interno di San Pietro.. :-O
Visto che con il counter di Hitstats posso sapere da dove si connettono i miei visitatori.. sono curioso di sapere chi mi segue da Barcellona :-) Non riesco a collegare nessuno a questa città (a parte una ex compagna di università) e chi da Sils im Domleschg nel cantone di Graubünden (Grigioni) in Svizzera? Qui non conosco davvero nessuno!!! Fatemelo sapere se vi va :-)

Second day off and last update for a while since I’ll work at least until Saturday surely.
I went to the Metropolis at Metrotown this morning. It’s the 2nd shopping centre in all Canada after the one in Edmonton, Alberta... for me, just used to the Fox Town in Mendrisio (Switzerland) has been quite a shock! Why?
Well, cause it’s huge!!! If you don’t get a map, you get lost... and knowing myself :-D ... I got a map!! I just went there to see the place and I ended up spending 200 $ in clothes!! (really cheap prices btw at Aeropostale and American Eagle Outfitters.. I bought, I don’t know how many tees:-)
Afternoon, again in Kitsilano Beach. This time doing some basketball throws! My free throw is a little bit rusty!!
This evening I went to watch “Angels & Demons”.. not bad.. worth the 12.50 $ ticket.. it was really funny listen the Italian dialogues.. all the actors but someone are Americans and their accent is so :-D Amazing that last year I just saw and visited all the place where have been shot..with my dear friend Sfigghy! Incredible how they built the Saint Peter’s interiors.. :-O
Since that with the Hitstats counter I can know from where my visitors log in.. I’m curious to know who is following me from Barcelona, Spain:-) I can’t link no one to this city (apart for an ex university mate) and who from Sils im Domleschg in the Graubünden canton in Switzerland? I really don’t know anyone there!! Let me know if u’d like to.

At the end of the Victoria Day what can i say?... I need a GPS in my f*****g brain! Queen Elizabeth Park & Victoria Drive!

For the first time.. English before Italian (I wrote in English firstly this time!)

I woke up and my first words are : “What the fuck??Are you fucking kidding me??”.... Do you guys wanna know why? Well..cause I roll up my window blind and I can say just that... It’s damn cloudy, cold and it’ll probably rain soon! Bloody hell! Yesterday was 22°, everyone was at the beach while I was working and today that I’m off the weather sucks like hell! Is this a damn challenge between me and the Vancouver climate? Well, if it is.. I’m probably going to lose.. holy crap!

Despite the weather, fighting against my chronic laziness, I decide to do what I wanted to do: go to see the Queen Elizabeth Park and the district among Commercial and Victoria Drive.

So, let’s start from the first: well, Queen Elizabeth Park it’s really cool. Quite different from Stanley Park and the other ones that I saw until now; here flowers and blossoms rule upon everything with thousands different colours. Was really nice walk among the different paths surrounded by small ponds and colourful flowers. The coolest thing was that I was on a location used for different episode of Stargate SG1..so cool. It isn’t the first time that it happens since that when I was in Prague we were on the location for Mission Impossible I and different other movies (Luighi which ones were the others?) and Rome has been used thousand times..but this time, I just looked for over Google and found out the places used.. great! Also this one it’s a romantic place under some point of view, just like the Seawalk around Kitsilano....there’s also a place to get married.. is a cool place for a weeding :-D I could marry here.. AHAHAHA..yea..in a century!!

So, after a couple of hours here, was time to go to see Commercial and Victoria Drive... and now, you’ll probably understand the title of this post. Like always I searched with Google Maps the direction using the public transport. Google Maps, is never wrong right??? So it says: just take the Skytrain to Nanaimo street (and until here it’s a piece of cake), then get out and go towards the 27^th street and turn in Victoria Drive. This is the fastest way. So, I wrote down everything and I went! The problem is that I don’t write down the direction, I mean: left, right and so... I arrive in Nanaimo Street and I start to walk. Oh, here we are.. 27^th street.. of course it’ll be on the left, I’m sure that I read that.. Of course IT WASN’T! After something like 2 km there’s no exit! Shit! And while I turn back, listening on my IPOD the song “La Playa del Sol” (I don’t think that I need to translate that), it starts to rain! Ironic, isn’t it??? Shit again!!!! I really have to buy an umbrella! I go on walking and I find Victoria Drive.. cool.. ! I think: well, on the map it didn’t look so long, why not try to see all of it... the problem is that is LONG!! Something like 4500 street numbers!! Oh God... And of course, also this time I take the wrong direction.. Let’s go on the right..I’m sure is the right one.. IT WASN’T again! Turn back..and oh my God!! I was already told that is full of Asians..nothing against them..but.. here seems that I’m the only white guy around..it’s not scaring..it’s just strange! Shops,restaurants, coin laundries.. a lot of them had only Chinese, Vietnamese or Japanese writings on their signs... it’s weird!! Once this district was Italian inhabited..now only some mark of that presence remains: a CALABRIA bakery (awesome!) and a couple of soccer pitches (the first ones ever seen). I walked, I don’t know, probably 4 km without be able to reach Commercial Drive. Was just raining too much.. but I saw the only German restaurant here in Vancouver. I already saw a photo of it..but it’s really a kind of cool! Maybe I’ll go once :-D ! In the end, I don’t think it’s a bad place to live, it’s just a little far but well connected (I’m sure that there is a bus from the station to there..damn Google Maps) but the asian presence is a little bit too strong for me.. Anyway everything is pretty different from downtown, no skyscrapers, just houses.

In the end.. I can tell that I really need to buy an umbrella and that if is possible implant a GPS into the human brain.. I wanna try to do that!!!!

(Mi scuso per l’italiano magari non perfetto, ho scritto prima in inglese, traducendo poi in italiano)

Mi sveglio e le mie prime parole sono: “What the fuck??Are you fucking kidding me??”…Volete sapere perché? Allora.. tiro su la tenda della mia finestra e posso dire esattamente solo quello.. E’ nuvoloso, freddo e probabilmente pioverà tra poco! Bloody hell! Ieri c’erano 22° , erano tutti in spiaggia mentre io ero al lavoro e oggi che sono off il tempo fa schifo! C’è per caso una sfida in atto tra me e il clima di Vancouver? Allora..se è cosi, probabilmente perderò.. merda!

Nonostante il tempo, lottando contro la mia ben conosciuta laziness , ho deciso di fare quello che avevo pensato di fare: andare a vedere il Queen Elizabeth Park e la zona compresa tra Commercial e Victoria Drive.

Iniziamo dal primo: Queen Elizabeth Park è davvero cool. Abbastanza diverso da Stanley Park e dagli altri che ho visto finora; qui i fiori la fanno da padroni sopra ogni altra cosa con migliaia di differenti colori. E’ stata un’esperienza carina camminare tra i differenti sentieri circondati da stagni e fiori colorati. La cosa più spettacolare era trovarsi su una location utilizzata per diversi episodi di Stargate SG1.. so cool. Non è stata la prima volta che mi sono trovato su un “set” visto che quando sono stato a Praga ho visto le location di Mission Impossible I e di diversi altri film (quali erano gli altri Luighi?) e Roma è stata usata migliaia di volte..ma questa volta ho proprio cercato in Google e ho trovato i posti utilizzati..great!! (http://www.rdanderson.com/stargate/location/location.htm). Anche questo é un posto, si può dire, romantico, sotto un certo punto di vista, come la Seawalk attorno a Kitsilano Beach.

Così, dopo un paio d’ore, era arrivato il momento di vedere Commercial e Victoria Drive.. e ora probabilmente capirete la ragione del titolo di questo post. Come sempre ho cercato in Google Maps le direzioni utilizzando il trasporto pubblico. Google Maps non sbaglia mai, vero??? Le direzioni erano: prendi lo Skytrain fino a Nanaimo Street (fino a qui, una cavolata) e da qui seguendo la 27th strada gira in Victoria Drive. Questa era la strada più veloce. Così annoto tutto e vado! Il problema è che non scrivo le direzioni dettagliate , destra, sinistra e così arrivo a Nanaimo Street e mi incammino. Ci siamo..ecco la 27th strada ..sicuramente devo girare a sinistra, sono sicuro che ho letto così.. ovviamente NON ERA a sinistra! Dopo qualcosa come 2 km non c’è uscita! E mentre torno indietro, ascoltando La Playa del Sol sul mio IPOD, inizia a piovere!Ironico, non è vero??? Merda di nuovo! Devo davvero comprarmi un ombrello! Vado avanti a camminare e trovo Victoria Drive..cool ! Penso, bene sulla mappa sta strade non sembrava così lunga, perché non provare a vederla tutta… il problema è che è dannatamente lunga!! Qualcosa come 4500 numeri civici !! Oh God.. E naturalmente anche questa volta prendo la direzione sbagliata.. andiamo a destra.. sono sicuro che è di la (mi sembra Rotta per Casa di Dio degli 883…solo che qui non c’è un Autogrill AHAHAH!!) invece ovviamente NO!! Torno indientro e.. Oh my God!!Mi era già stato detto che questa zona era piena di asiatici ma qui sembra che sono l’unico bianco in giro… non è qualcosa che spaventa.. è solo stano! Una volta questa era la zona degli italiani ma oggi rimane solamente qualche piccolo segno di questa presenza passata: una panetteria di nome CALABRIA e un paio di campi da calcio (i primi che ho visto finora). Ho camminato penso 4 km ma non sono riuscito a raggiungere Commercial Drive . Stava piovendo troppo.. però sono riuscito a vedere l’unico ristorante tedesco di Vancouver . Avevo già visto le foto ma è qualcosa di cool! Magari ci andrò una volta :-D ! Concludendo non credo sia un brutto posto per viverci, è solamente un pochino troppo lontano anche se è ben collegato (sono sicuro c’è un bus tra la stazione dello Skytrain e Victoria Drive..maledetto Google Maps!) ma la presenza asiatica è un troppo eccessiva a mio avviso…ad ogni modo è abbastanza diverso da downtown, no grattacieli, solo case unifamiliari.

Alla fine, devo dire che mi serve davvero un ombrello e che se è possibile farsi un impianto Gps direttamente nel cervello..voglio provare a farlo!!!
