North Vancouver, Capilano Suspension Bridge, Lonsdale Quay Market, Chinatown...

Graham è tornato sabato notte dagli States ed è qui a Vancouver fino a giovedì quando si imbarcherà per un viaggio di 15 ore by bus da qui verso la provincia dell’Alberta, precisamente verso Calgary, ultima tappa dei suoi 8 mesi canadesi. Tornerà in UK il 21 giugno dopo aver visto Banff, Jasper e la stessa Calgary. Approfittando della sua presenza qui per questi due miei giorni off, ci siamo dedicati a un po’ di turismo qui nei dintorni visitando qualcosa che entrambi non avevamo ancora visto.

Ci siamo perciò diretti verso North Vancouver per vederci il Capilano Suspension Bridge, una delle attrazioni più famose e popolari di Vancouver (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capilano_Suspension_Bridge). Pensavo ci fosse solo il ponte sospeso da vedere mentre in realtà il tutto è circondato da una foresta pressoché incontaminata con tanto di scoiattoli che ti passano davanti tranquilli come se nulla fosse. Ancora nessuna traccia di quei maledetti procioni che in 2 mesi non ho ancora visto! Il ponte è spettacolare (un po’ caro, 23 $ con la tessera ISIC, il miglior investimento mai fatto) , sospeso a 70 metri dalla valle sottostante, oscilla di brutto quando lo si attraversa! Ma non c’è comunque da preoccuparsi visto che, come la guida australiana ha detto (che accento che hanno!), può reggere il peso di due Boeing 747 a pieno carico, equivalenti a 17000 persone! Dopo la visita al ponte (raggiunto comodamente tramite i mezzi pubblici, prima il Seabus, cioè il traghetto che opera tra Vancouver e North Vancouver e poi un normale bus urbano) ci siamo fatti un giretto intorno al Lonsdale Quay Market dove ho mangiato vietnamese per la prima volta nella mia vita, non male e il prezzo..ridicolo! Da qui ci siamo poi diretti verso Vancouver con una visita piuttosto veloce lungo Chinatown (i negozi cinesi vendono delle cose assurde, mai viste, con descrizione e prezzi solo in cinese, eravamo gli unici bianchi in giro.. più o meno) che costeggia la zona da evitare della città e cioè il Downtown Eastside. La giornata si è conclusa lungo la Seawall partendo dal Telus World Science attraverso il Cambie Street Bridge verso Homer Street.

Ascoltando le avventure di Graham, sono sempre più deciso a vedere gli States. E’ stato a L.A. , San Francisco, Alcatraz, nella Death Valley, a San Diego, Las Vegas, al Grand Canyon spendendo una cifra irrisoria considerando ciò che è riuscito a vedere. Ognuno di questi posti è così fucking cool! It’s America man!! Lo so, manca ancora tanto, ma non vedo l’ora di fare lo stesso!

Domani penso ce ne andremo in qualche spiaggia che non ho ancora visto, penso Jericho Beach.. vediamo come saremo combinati! Il tempo è comunque l’ideale.. circa 24° senza umidità..proprio come laggiù… a Las Canteras!!

Graham came back Saturday night from the States and precisely from San Diego, California and he’ll stay around here in Vancouver until Thursday evening when he’ll board a bus toward the province of Alberta to reach Calgary, his last Canadian step before fly back to Britain, to the Motherland and the Queen :-D . He’ll go back there on 21^st after a visit to Banff, Jasper and Calgary itself.

So thanks to his presence here, we’ve been tourists all the day long, paying a visit to something that we didn’t see until today.

So we went to North Vancouver to see the Capilano Suspension Bridge, one of the most famous and popular attraction here in Vancouver (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capilano_Suspension_Bridge) . I thought there was just the bridge to see but it’s not like that. Everything is surrounded by a cool rainforest with a bunch of wildlife, squirrels included. They just cross your path without any kind of problem. Still no raccoon.. damn, it’s 2 months that I’m waiting to see them, but though luck! The bridge is really cool, kind of expensive get in the park (23 CAD with my ISIC card, the best investment so far) but really cool. It’s suspended 70 meters above the canyon and damn, it shakes a lot when you cross it! There’s nothing to worry about since like the Australian guide (what accent they have!) told, it can sustain the weight of two Boeing 747 fully loaded that means roughly 17000 people! After the visit to the bridge (easily reached by public transport, firstly by the Seabus, the ferry that operates between Vancouver and North Vancouver shore, then with a normal urban bus) we walked around the Lonsdale Quay Market where I ate Vietnamese for the first time in my life... not bad and amazingly cheap! From here we headed back to Vancouver with a short and fast visit to Chinatown, the second largest Chinatown in the Western Hemisphere (Chinese shops sell amazing and strange things..with prices, descriptions and everything else strictly only in Chinese.. we were the only white ones around, more or less... ) that runs along the bad part of the city, the Downtown Eastside. The day finished along the Seawall, strolling from the Telus World Science across the Cambie Street Bridge toward Homer Street.

By the way: I can't believe that just walkin' around for 1 sunny day I got sunburned! That sucks..damn! Damn ghost skin :-D !

Listening Graham’s adventures, I’m everyday more sure about visiting the States! He went to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Alcatraz, the Death Valley, Vegas, San Diego, the Grand Canyon, spending really so a few thinking about what he was able to see. Everyone of these places is just so fucking damn cool!! It’ America man!! I know, it’s still kind of far away when I’ll do that but I’m so looking forward to do that!

Tomorrow I guess we’ll go to some beach over here, someone that I’ve not seen yet, probably Jericho Beach .. let’s see how it’ll be! The weather it’s just great.. 24° C without humidity..pretty hot though.. just like over there.. in Las Canteras!
